The commune is surounded by
Bârgău, Călimani and Bistriţa Mountains, being placed on a plateau with mild slopes and highs between
900 and 1.100 m.

History
Situated on the road the links
Moldova to Transilvania, Poiana Stampei commune was first mentioned in
1593, through a paper in which the hospodar of Moldova,
Aron Vodă, asks the
bistriţeni not to trespass the bouderies of the country. The name of
Poiana Stampei comes from the stamp on the documents used for passing the frontier, of the merchants that carried goods between the two provinces. After a while, at this frontier started to form a settlement, by people that have been atracted by the pitoresque of this regioni.
